1608 Filter Modules - Technical Information and Connection Details

Kemo 1608 filter modules are 8 pole filter modules, in a 50 x 50 mm (2 x 2 ") package. The 1608 filter modules use 8 unlatched control lines to set the filter module cut-off frequencies, in 255 steps of multiples of the modules base frequency.

When designing circuits to around all the Kemo filter modules it is important to follow these guidelines:-
Clean stable noise free power rails
Decouple power rails close to the filter
Connect 'trim' pin to trim circuit or ground
Use large ground tracks and ground planes if possible
High speed digital signals and analogue circuits do not always mix well
Beware digital noise, even on zero volt lines
Beware DC-DC converters (see our DC-DC page)

DC Offset drift       100 μV/°C at 25 °C
Signal level             within +/- 2.5 Volts of supply
Phase matching     +/- 2° (usually < +/- 1°)
Amplitude matching depends on filter response

NOTE - these are general figures, signal level, filter response, and frequency are all factors which influence filter performance. We manufacture filter modules from the best components we can obtain, and usually produce well matched batches of filter modules.

Typical Circuit
Below is the typical circuit that we recommend for use with the 1608 filter modules. If the trim circuit is not used the trim pin should be connected to 0 Volts.

Pin layout

Note: We recommend the use of small flush mounting sockets mounted in the circuit board. We have started to fit them as we update a number of our products and find them much easier than soldering the module into the board. Part number Jay-Tec Systems Ltd PDI-316/cS-009-2075.

Labelling
1608 filter modules are labelled as follows:-
1608/FF/RR PP
FF = base frequency (Fb)
RR = filter response
PP = Lowpass (LP) or Highpass (HP)
eg: 1608/200/41/ LP
is a 200 base frequency, response 41 (General purpose) Lowpass filter.

Setting the Frequency

The cut-off frequency of 1608 modules is set by 8 unlatched external logic lines. The control lines are active when low. In the recommended circuit the control lines are held high with 100 kΩ resistors and then switched low.
D0 is the least significant bit (LSB), D7 is the most significant bit (MSB) value 128 x base frequency.
VDref is the supply voltage for the logic and control circuits in the module, and may be between +5V to +15V DC, the logic changes state at approximately 50% of VDref.
NOTE The filters can be damaged by code 0000000
REMEMBER Kemo logic control is ACTIVE LOW.
